With a large number of superminis selling on price and value, Toyota has stuck to its guns, and built a solid-feeling urban runabout which majors on quality and features. The original Toyota Yaris was introduced in 1999, and since then it has been a very competitive choice among buyers in the supermini market.
With respect to its looks, practicality, rise and handling, performance and reliability it meets its owner's satisfaction. The Toyota Yaris has received a full five star rating for occupant protection in the EuroNCAP crash tests programme.
Yaris is recommended to anyone looking for a small car. It's great for longer trips, as the firm seats and good driving position doesn't make the journey tiring. The Yaris cabin consists of light and dark materials. The dials in the centrally-mounted instrument cluster, it looks tidy and uncluttered. The Yaris is a hoot to drive, providing plenty of wheel on each corner fun and has the ability to sail from one corner to the next without fuss or drama.
On the space front, though, the news is good. Two six-footers can comfortably sit one behind the other and the rear 60/40 split seats can slide independently front and behind through 6in, which means you can have maximum passenger room or maximum boot space, depending on the occasion. The seats fold perfectly flat for a class-leading cargo space and there's under-floor storage in the boot area. Another clever touch is the rerouting of the exhaust pipe to allow for a flat floor in the rear.
Some people have complained the about wheel noise of this car. This car being a small car, this problem is obvious and can be reduced by applying under coat in the wheel arcs. The 1.4-litre D-4D TR Yaris comes with air-conditioning, alloy wheels and electric mirrors. The diesel emits 119g/km of CO2 - placing it into tax band B at £35 per year. The 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine has also been improved, with increased horsepower torque. Toyota claims that the new generation will hold even higher residual values than the previous generation Rav-4.
The Toyota Yaris is a stylish and fun supermini. It boasts good build quality, good practicality, and decent style. But is expensive compared to its rivals. The range starts at more than £8,000, rising to over £13,250 for the top of the range.
